According to Wikipedia, The Nasdaq Composite is "stock market index that includes almost all stocks listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Along with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P 500, it is one of the three most-followed stock market indices in the United States."
In order for companies to be listed on Nasdaq, they must meet a variety of different requirements, including meeting corporate governance rules, regular bid prices, a certain number of publicly traded shares, a certain number of shareholders, and an average trading volume (Investopedia).
