West End Biz Creates In-Demand Holiday Gift Boxes with Custom Socks

The West End Business Improvement Zone (West End BIZ) was established in 1991 and is geographically the largest BIZ zone of the 15 in Winnipeg. A Business Improvement Zone (BIZ) is a non-profit association of business people in a particular area of the city who seek to promote the area as a positive environment for businesses. This allows local businesses to share ideas on how to attract clients and customers to their places of business, undertake physical improvements to the areas they work in, and market their businesses. They work to attract customers to the West End and create a more vibrant neighborhood that benefits both the business community and the residents.

West End BIZ faces unique challenges in the non-profit sector. “We work with very tight budgets and we are always trying to make the most from what we have. Another challenge is the large geographical area that we cover, we provide many different services to our members so making sure we are covering the whole area is something we are always working on.”

Additionally, the West End is special in that they have a wide variety of business industries in its neighborhood. From an industrial area to more of an urban area, their members can be looking for very different services from them. They are always working towards making sure everyone's needs are being met and providing the best services they can.

Because they contain various types of businesses across a wide range of industries, certain promotional material that might work really well for their restaurants might not work as well for their financial services sector. They needed to create promotional material that would be beneficial to all of its members and their customers.

The socks that they ordered were included in their annual West End Holiday Gift Boxes. “The first year we heard a lot of positive feedback from customers saying they really liked the socks so we brought them back for the next year. The next year we had folks reaching out if they could buy some extra socks on their own, they were so popular! Our socks have now become known in the community and folks are always excited when we are giving them away or have them at events etc.”
